About the Health Psychology research section

In a more general sense, health psychology is a systematic application of psychological knowledge into the field of health, illness and the system of health care. The topic of interest of health psychology are patterns of influence of mental dispositions, functions and processes upon the health of an individual, the beginning and development of illnesses and possibilities of their therapy, rehabilitation and prevention.

Current health psychology is based upon two models – traditional etiopathogenetical which forms questions, such as „Who gets ill and why?“, „Who from the ill gets better and why?“, „How can we prevent an illness and help toward recovery?“ and inversely oriented salutogenetic model of A. Antonovsky forming questions such as „Why some people did not get ill although they have been exposed to the same conditions as those who did fell ill?“, which moved the balance of attention from the source of illness to the source of health and well-being. The source of researching health at the Institute of Psychology is a belief that the only possible approach to understanding health and illness is complex research of the mutual interconnection of systems and processes, which participate on functioning of an individual as a whole including the contexts, which create his/her life in this world. Social integration, social setting of an individual in social structure is important determining factor in mental well-being and health.

The place of an individual in social structure also influences how he/she is exposed to stressors and the latent harmful effects upon well-being and health. The harmful effects are moderated or lowered by personal and social resources and strategies to cope with stressful situations. The equipment with personal and social sources and strategies and their use is also socially influenced in a sense that members of certain disadvantaged groups can become more vulnerable toward negative physical or psychological effect of stress.

The attention is directed toward determination of mechanisms of influence of mental dispositions, functions and processes on health of an individual on the basis of salutogenetic approach to health. The focus of research of resistance of individual toward stress rests in researching of resilience toward negative influence of stress on health and their social and personality based sources. The research of coping in stress related situations is aimed at the determinants of choice of proactive manner of coping with stress situations. The attention is paid to the failure of individual either behavioural or socio-pathological.

Today, there are more than 600 articles on the Hardiness concept. Dr. Salvatore R. Maddi Ph.D., founder of the Hardiness concept began his research in 1975 at the Illinois Bell Telephone Company. It's clear he was on to something by the massive research that followed his pioneering efforts. Researchers continue to investigate the relevance of the Hardiness concept to their milieu. These environments encompass medicine, organizations, academia, public safety, sport, military, and family.
